The Capital Region of Copenhagen is looking for Postdoc in Next-generation Computational Dose Control for Transcranial Electric Stimulation

Do you like working on new ways to interface neuroimaging with transcranial brain stimulation? Are you fascinated by modern computational approaches to personalize and improve transcranial brain stimulation? Do you thrive working in inspiring multidisciplinary teams, which bridge between computational modelling, neuroimaging and cognitive neuroscience? If so, we have an exciting PostDoc opportunity for you as part of the large-scale research consortium MeMoSLAP (www.memoslap.de), generously funded by the German Research Foundation.

MeMoSLAP aims to determine the causes of interindividual variability of the physiological and behavioral effects of focal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). State-of-the-art multimodal MR imaging is one pillar of this research, aiming to decipher the anatomical, functional and microstructural contributors to tDCS variability. Electric field calculations play an important role in assessing the individual stimulation dose. Your research will leverage unique multimodal datasets that encompass structural and microstructural MRIs, CT and Magnetic Resonance Current Density Imaging (MRCDI). You will develop next-generation volume conductor models of the head with unmet accuracy, and you will link dose simulations with microstructural MRI to reveal the macro- and microstructural features that cause tDCS variability. Your work will help shape the future of personalized transcranial brain stimulation and its potential clinical applications, making a lasting impact on the field.

The Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance (DRCMR) at Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre (Denmark) is seeking a 2-year postdoc in next-generation computational dose control for Transcranial Electric Stimulation. The position includes the possibility for an extension. You will be part of the research team of Professor Axel Thielscher that works jointly at DRCMR and the Dept. of Health Technology, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). You will join the highly profiled MeMoSLAP project, run among others by Prof. Agnes Flöel and Prof. Marcus (University of Greifswald), Prof. Michael Nitsche (iFADO Dortmund) and Prof. Gesa Hartwigsen (Max Planck Institute and University of Leipzig). The MeMoSLAP project includes leading expertise in transcranial brain stimulation and its integration with multimodal MRI, computational modelling and cognitive neuroscience.

Your responsibilities:

  • To link individual anatomical features and tissue properties estimated from structural MRI and CT to electric field dose measured by MRCDI, leveraging a unique in-house dataset
  • To contribute to the development of next-generation machine learning-based head segmentation for improved dose predictions, as part of the SimNIBS project (www.simnibs.org)
  • To actively collaborate with team members of the multidisciplinary MeMoSLAP project on applying your methods to the analyses of large-scale multi-center imaging data to reveal the causes of interindividual variability of tDCS.

Your profile:

You should be a highly motivated internationally minded team player with the following qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Computational Neuroscience, Medical Imaging, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or similar.
  • Strong foundation in neuroimaging analyses
  • Experience in volume conductor modeling and optimization methods is a plus
  • Be familiar with machine learning and numerical frameworks in Python
  • Good coding skills
  • Fluency in English writing and scientific communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and think critically, while also effectively collaborating and contributing to the research team.

About us:

The project will be carried out at the Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance (DRCMR) which is a leading research centre for biomedical MRI in Europe (www.drcmr.dk). Our mission is to triangulate MR physics and basic physiology from preclinical to clinical research. Approximately 75 researchers from a diverse range of disciplines are currently pursuing basic and clinically applied MR research and its validation with a focus on structural, functional, and metabolic MRI of the human brain and its disorders. The DRCMR is embedded in the Center for Functional and Diagnostic Imaging and Research, a large diagnostic imaging department including all biomedical imaging modalities at the Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre.

The DRCMR has a state-of-the-art research infrastructure for human medical imaging, which includes six whole-body MR scanners (one 7T, three 3T and two 1.5T scanners), clinical CT scanners, a High-Performance Computer cluster and several state-of-the-art laboratories for non-invasive brain stimulation.

The Neurophysics group is a cross-disciplinary research team that works both at DRCMR and at the Technical University of Denmark. This setting gives us unique opportunities to translate cutting-edge methodological research into relevant and novel biomedical applications. Our vision is to transform transcranial brain stimulation into effective medical treatments. Personalization based on medical imaging data plays a key role in that endeavor.

Your position:

The candidate will be employed for an initial period of 24 months, with possibility for extension, at the Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance. He/she will be an active part of the Neurophysics Group (drcmr.dk/neurophysics) led by Professor Axel Thielscher.

Salary and Terms of Employment

Salary, pension, and terms of employment are by the agreement between the Danish Regions (Danske Regioner) and the relevant professional organization. The salary depends on background education and seniority. Further, supplements can be negotiated. Note that candidates coming from abroad may be eligible for tax reductions. The position is open for candidates of all nationalities. We expect you to start on March 1st, 2024, or soon thereafter.
